Reading

All children have been given a reading record for them to write down their progress for the books they are currently reading. Please can all children be reading at home at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes, with a signature in the record to show this.

We choose books within a given number range which can be found on the side of the books. Each child has their own range to choose from. After they have completed a book, they can use Accelerated Reader to take a quiz in school and challenge their understanding of the text. This gives the children points and is great to build up a sense of competition and challenge with their reading. If you would like to look up books on Accelerated Reader, please use the AR Bookfinder - http://www.arbookfind.co.uk/

I like to collect in the reading records and check them each week. For Year 5s this will usually be a Thursday and then Friday for Year 6. We also spend time celebrating our successes in the quizes we have taken during that week.

As well as reading at home, we have guided reading sessions with our teachers throughout the week. These will usually look at specific skills such as information retrieval or inference in a wide range of genres.

Reading is an important skill so please ask your child about the book they are reading - perhaps they could try to convince you to read it too!
