Spring Term 2026

We are incredibly excited to be using David Long’s stunning book, 'When We Walked on the Moon', as our literary anchor. This text brings the awe-inspiring history of the Apollo missions to life, providing a rich foundation for our writing.
The children will be honing their skills in narrative non-fiction, learning how to blend historical facts with atmospheric, emotive descriptions. We will be stepping into the 'moon boots' of the astronauts to write gripping first-person accounts and formal reports, focusing on high-level vocabulary and complex sentence structures to convey the tension and triumph of the lunar landings. This unit not only challenges their technical writing ability but also encourages them to reflect on the courage and human ingenuity that defined this era of exploration.

Topic
It is wonderful to welcome the children back for what promises to be an out-of-this-world Spring Term. Our curriculum this term takes a deep dive into the wonders of our universe and the intricacies of our own planet. In Science, we will be launching our 'Earth and Space' unit, where pupils will explore the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the Sun in the solar system.
This scientific exploration ties perfectly into our Geography focus, where we will be mastering the 'imaginary lines' that help us navigate our world—including the Equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Alongside developing precision in using four and six-figure grid references, we will also be tackling the critical global issue of climate change, discussing its impact on various biomes. To bring our learning to life through creativity, our Art lessons will be inspired by the abstract and vibrant works of Peter Thorpe. The children will be using his unique style to create their own space-themed masterpieces, blending scientific accuracy with artistic expression.
Reading
One of the key priorities on our return to school will be to support children with their reading. It is crucial to children’s development that they are reading regularly. As a minimum, all children are asked to read at least 3 times a week, for at least half an hour, as part of their weekly homework and have it signed in their planner by an adult. These will be checked by their English teacher in English lessons. Children should tell their teacher when they need to change their book and they will complete an Accelerated Reader quiz on an iPad in school. Children will be able to change library books during the school day.
Spellings/Phonics
It is still important that children in Year 5 and 6 work at improving their spelling which is a key part of the National Curriculum for writing. Children will practise spellings in the mornings when they come in to school. They also will be taught spelling in year groups as part of their English lessons. For homework, children will have the Year 5 and 6 list of spellings to learn – these are challenging spellings so will need some work throughout the half term. They will also have spelling homework some weeks using ‘Spelling Shed’.
PE Timetables
PE sessions will take place for children in Year 5 and 6 on a Thursday with Mr Darby ans the PE Team. Children will need an appropriate outdoor PE kit in school on Thursday as they will be outside for the afternoon, including a coat in needed. Children should continue to come to school wearing their full PE Kit on their allocated day (and also on Fitness Friday). As they will have to wear their PE kit throughout the whole school day, the children will need to be suitably dressed and prepared for indoors, outdoors and all weather conditions.
We are suggesting that the Elworth PE t -shirt and shorts/skort be worn underneath the Elworth jogging bottoms and zip up top. (This to allow layers to be taken off if children get too warm when inside, whilst providing layers for warmth when outside). A waterproof jacket is a necessity, in case of poor weather. Children will also need to come in wearing a sensible pair of sports trainers.
Homework
Details will be given each week as to the content/type of each homework.
CGP Books will be available to use for homework at the earliest opportunity.
